When my first son was born almost 6 years ago, I bought a new camera and set out to re-learn all I had been taught in high school about photography as quickly as possible. I was desperate to document as much as I could from each phase of his new little life. Those pictures from his first year? *sigh* At this point, I’m just happy that I have anything. There were hundreds and thousands of terrible pictures. And so much frustration. That first year turned into two years of trial and error, googling, reading, shooting more bad pictures, learning, and finally, making photos I was proud of. Let me make this journey easier on you. Whether you’re in business already and want to start incorporating a real-life, documentary style into your brand or you’re simply a hobbyist who wants to preserve your family’s memories in a powerful way, I can provide the tools and support necessary to get you there with minimal crying and gray hairs. Let’s get started before your kids (or your clients’ kids) are grown and out of the house.
Together we can work on…
- Getting your camera off of Auto and on to Manual so you can start taking control over your images
- Mastering your camera’s settings in a variety of real-life lighting situations
- Overcoming your fear of challenging light and cluttered environments to open up a world of shooting possibilities
- Shooting with a variety of creative compositions to turn your snapshots into real works of art
- Establishing a solid foundation for clean editing to create timeless photographs
- Identifying the big and little moments worth photographing so you’re not wasting energy with the ‘spray & pray’ shooting method
- Telling compelling stories with your photographs
- Learning how to document the everyday in a way that speaks to you and your viewers
- Incorporating storytelling photography into your business and standing out in a saturated market
- Refining your business and marketing practices to bring in new clients and keep your old ones
- Finding the motivation and inspiration to shoot often
- And anything else your little heart desires!
Mentoring with me is designed to promote sustained growth. Students typically spend 1-2 weeks at a time learning from me, receiving feedback and guidance, before breaking to practice what we’ve covered. By taking an extended and more measured approach, students have the chance to solidify their understanding of the topics we’ve discussed during our breaks and are able to move on to more complex concepts and techniques each time we resume. Your time spent mentoring with me is completely tailored to your short and long-term goals through week long sessions. We work together in a private forum where I encourage daily shooting and provide exercises customized to help you grow.
Current mentoring options are as follows:
2 Weeks $225
4 Weeks $395
You have the option to schedule your weeks consecutively or to spread them out however you see fit. Full payment is due before we begin working together. Interested in something longer than 6 weeks? Email me and we can discuss your goals and the mentoring options that make the most sense for you.
Follow up $115
If you’ve completed your 2, 4 or 6 weeks of mentoring and want to check back in, you have the option of booking an additional single week. Take advantage of this option if you find yourself low on motivation, unsure of the next step to take, or in need of some accountability.
Portfolio Review $65
Nervous about committing to long-term mentoring? Submit up to 20 images for critique on technique, composition, lighting, moment, editing and creativity. We’ll discuss the purpose of your specific portfolio, taking into account your vision and your intended audience, and focus on creating a cohesive body of work. Get a taste for my teaching style and the type of detailed feedback you can expect from me and earn a $25 credit toward any future mentoring you decide to book with me.
“The decision to work with Kayla as my mentor was worth every single penny. I have taken a few online courses before but none of them was so rewarding. She shared so much of her knowledge and experience with me in an open and honest way. None of my questions were left without her answer. Every piece of advice she gave me was precise and made a lot of sense to me. It was a great pleasure to work with Kayla as a professional and as a person. I would highly recommend her mentoring to anyone who would like to improve their skills and take their photography to a higher level.”

“Working with Kayla was such a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed every single day of the mentoring, got tons of information, clear guidelines and honest answers to my (really) long list of questions. I needed a professional critique on my work and I really appreciated Kayla’s honest opinion and very good points on what to improve. Thanks to this experience I feel that I moved forward, closer to my goal of becoming a professional photographer. I absolutely recommend to have a mentoring session with Kayla to anyone whose heart leans toward the documentary genre of photography.”

“Being mentored by Kayla has been a wonderful experience that has given me the tools and foundation I was looking for to start my own photography business. When I came across her Facebook profile, I was so impressed by her work and her style; I just fell in love with it. I hired her to do a newborn session of my baby and when she offered mentoring, I jumped on the opportunity! Kayla openly shared so much of her knowledge (which is extensive) and tailored the mentoring to my goals. She provided detailed feedback on a daily basis and worked closely with me to maximize my mentoring experience with her. It amazes me how much I have grown and improved my photography from this. I highly recommend mentoring with Kayla! “

“After following Kayla on Facebook for months and admiring her photos, I decided to take my hobby of family photography to the next level. Never did I expect to gain so much knowledge in such a short amount of time! I was able to take my “mom with a good camera” hobby and grow into an aspiring professional. Kayla gives detailed feedback on all aspects of shooting, camera use, composition, culling and editing in a supportive, productive way. She offers her own experience to build upon and then guides you towards finding your own styles. After completing just one week of mentoring I was hooked…and came back for a few additional weeks! I would highly recommend this mentoring experience to photographers of all ability levels.”
